I believe that most of today's acting teachers are charlatans. Some are more well intentioned than others, nevertheless, they are charlatans. I call them the "Drama Nazis", with their Methods, their Meisners and their B.S. psychological/emotional exercises. Why? Aren't you already in touch with your emotions? I pray, yes. If not, find a good shrink, not an acting coach. An acting workshop is supposed to be fun, not an emotional fire drill.
These people are teaching 19th Century acting techniques in the 21st Century. They have taken what is a child's game and over intellectualized it into a 12 Step Program. It's Not! It's "Cowboys and Indians". I teach, "See the Character, Be the Character."
Your job as an actor is to tell the author's story, with as much (if not more) imagination and vulnerability than the author used in creating it, while making it as believable as possible! I teach: "Keep it Simple, Make it Real."
"Step In. Say Your Lines. Make the Damned Thing Interesting."
That's it! Case closed! Have fun! Oscar time!
